CONSTRUCTION SITE
INGRESS/EGRESS RECOMMENDATIONS
As a contractor, developer,
builder, and/or engineer, your project may be in violation of a National
Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, if a sediment
discharge is occurring on your job site. Fines for violations of the
NPDES program may range up to $27,500 a day for each violation. Huffman
& Carpenter, Inc. (H&C) has the expertise and experience to help your
project through the regulations and required best management design and
compliance for NPDES so you can avoid potential penalties as a result of
sediment discharge from your project site onto the public roads and
waterways.
As a contractor, developer, builder, and/or engineer, be aware that
additional Best Management Practices (BMPs) generally need to be
implemented due to any inclement weather we may experience.
During melt periods, off tracking is a real concern for local job sites.
H&C recommends daily inspections that should be conducted at all job
sites to insure sediment discharge.
-Perform daily inspections of all egress areas of your job sites
-Replace the Geotextile Fabric used in the apron area of the egress
-Replace the overlying gravel and crushed rock as required; you may
need larger
void spaces and therefore gravel or cobble size material may
be required in the
apron area
-If working on a very muddy site, install wheel washers in front of the
gravel and
geotextile of the egress to ensure
that wheels are clean and free of sediment
Listed below are two types of wheel washing systems available for use on
construction sites; Moby Dick roller units and Moby Dick drive-through
units. Both units are made by Frutiger and consist of a range of 18
different models from which to choose. With roller units present in each
model, the wheels of the work vehicles are automatically turned and
washed while the vehicle is moving at a steady slow rate or in a parked
position. Wheel washing units are ideal because soils that become wedged
into the crevasses of work trucks are dislodged. Drive-through units are
fast and effective due to their intense water spray that occurs from
both sides of the units as well as from underneath. All units come
complete with an integrated water recycling system, which in turn have
low total water consumption and can be used under winter conditions.
These types of units are available for rental, sale, and lease. The cost
of wheel washing systems will vary depending on which system utilized,
but is always less than costly fines or construction delays. Frutiger
recommends contacting a local distributor to determine which system is
most cost effective for your job.
So as a contractor, developer, builder, and/or engineer, consider and
follow these simple procedures which can be installed, maintained,
replaced, and/or purchased to save your company from possible work
delays or costly shut downs. Call Huffman & Carpenter, Inc. with any
questions or concerns.
