Around the
country, dust control issues are escalating, leading to
lawsuits, and stop-work orders on large construction projects
(refer to the link Erosion Control/ NPDES regulations). Taking
into account the different operational requirements of various
services H&C has provided a resource page, with links to
multiple companies that provide dust control products.
Many companies have struggled for years trying to find the
solution to their dust-control issues. Some companies have used
soil stabilizing chemicals for dust suppression such as calcium
chloride and reprocessed oil, which is an alternative to calcium
chloride. These companies have found that the best solution for
soil stabilization resulted from using a polymer resin, mixed
with water in a (4-7):1 solution. This product not only stopped
the dust on a dirt and gravel road but also bound the road so
that it appeared almost like asphalt through summer. The polymer
resin chemical is now owned by Midwest Industrial Supply and has
since been renamed EK-35 (refer to Midwest Industrial Supply
link). However, this product is a little different because it
doesn’t need to be mixed with water. The product is now
formulated with synthetic fluids and resins, which controls dust
and stabilize soil.
Dust-control products can also be used with other methods to
achieve optimal results. A major source of dust can be
attributed to the ingress/egress areas of construction sites.
Many companies are now focusing on ingress/egress locations for
dust-control. Companies often run into problems when topical
applications such as calcium chloride that are not suppressing
dust or stabilizing soils. This can result in significant mud
and dust drag out from numerous project sites. Companies have
tried using methods of mechanical sweeping and manually hosing
down the wheels of truck at ingress/egress locations, which
usually results in poor dust-control. Understanding how new
dust-control products and techniques can be applied to your
needs is important. Through the years H&C, Inc. has developed a
professional relationship with many local erosion control and
dust control specialist. Solving dust-control issues can become
extremely expensive and cause major time delays. It is important
for your company to understand how new techniques and products
are changing the way dust-control takes place. |
