Location: Tecate River,
Tecate,
Baja California, Mexico
Huffman & Carpenter, Inc. is seeking an
individual who is interested in assisting the Foundation La Puerta with
retaining a qualified consultant to develop and implement a constructed wetland
for waste-water treatment and a river restoration plan for a very disturbed
section of the Tecate River. The project is located in Tecate, Baja California,
Mexico and is funded by Foundation La Puerta (www.fundacionlapuerta.org).
Current land use practices have caused a steady
decline in water quality, causing the need for restoration of an 8 mile stretch
of river that runs through the city of Tecate. The project involves assisting
the Foundation in selection of a qualified consultant to prepare a comprehensive
River Restoration Plan, including grading plans and specifications. The
motivated, preferably Spanish speaking individual would gain invaluable
experience and assist the Foundation in constructing a wetland for wastewater
treatment and identifying areas for potential river restoration through
geomorphic assessments, hydraulic/sediment transport analysis, and biological
studies. Once the target areas have been identified, the project would
implement mitigation measures that will be effective in achieving the water
restoration goals. This includes the innovative use of native materials for
construction of Best Management Practices (BMPs) that will provide bank
stabilization, flood control, and water quality improvements.
Experience is required in one or more of the
following areas: restoration ecology, with emphasis on river process; water
quality; or fluvial geomorphology. Compensation will include a round trip
flight to San Diego with ground transportation to Tecate, Mexico, room and board
at Rancho La Puerta (a 5 star resort, www.rancholapuerta.com), and a $200 per
month stipend. Ability to speak Spanish fluently is helpful, but not required.
