The PWS certification is awarded by the Society of Wetland Scientists, a non-profit organization.  One of the main ways that this organization furthers their stated goal to enhance scientific and educational objectives is by encouraging and strengthening professional standards in all activities that center around wetland science.  Their certification program is a powerful institution to help raise those standards. Currently, they have the only wetland-specific certification program in the world.

A person who is PWS certified has academic and on the job experience that is recognized as meeting the standards expected by the wetland science community as a whole.
