of:
Watershed assessments give a descriptive picture of a
particular watershed and how it functions, how it is structured, and how it is
being damaged. Generally an assessment will begin by characterizing the
watershed's physical characteristics such as water flow, sediment transport,
vegetation and how it is changing, wildlife habitat, and sources of
pollution. The assessment will also consider more external factors such as
social and economic factors. Who is using the land, who owns the land, and
whose legal/political jurisdiction does the land fall under are all questions
that a watershed assessment should address. Comparing the current
characteristics of the watershed with historical trends allows for examination
of how the watershed is changing, for better or for worse. Water budgets
examine the ability of the watershed to recharge water removed through usage and
evaporation.
Assessments are used for a variety of things.
Resource planners can use assessments to study how to best use the watershed
while land use planners can use the assessment to understand the impacts of
projects on the watershed. Any protection or restoration efforts are
formulated directly from the watershed assessment's recommendations. The
assessment helps to prioritize areas that are in need of assistance. These
types of projects can also be used to promote public awareness.
